Here are a few examples of when an extremity MRI may be helpful…
The patient isn’t getting better: After x-rays have been evaluated and conservative treatments have been exhausted, many clinicians find that MRI scans yield extremely useful information. This can include stress fractures, ligament and tendon tears and inflammatory states of a variety of soft tissue structures that are not always apparent on x-ray or during a physical examination.
Chronic heel pain: Many patients experience altered biomechanics before presenting to a physician with a condition that requires surgical intervention. It has been our experience that in some cases, Baxter’s nerve has been damaged by the altered biomechanics. Better to know that before surgery. MRI can show the atrophy of muscle that suggests damage to Baxter’s nerve.
Rule out osteomyelitis: When there is a normal marrow signal on MRI, negative predictive rate for osteomyelitis approaches 100%. “One test—you’re done!” Our experience indicates that this occurs in approximately 40% of suspected osteomyelitis cases.
Neuromas: There are a significant number of instances where more than one neuroma is present in the forefoot or the neuroma is in a different location than suspected. The surgery is performed successfully, yet the patient continues to experience symptoms. MRI prior to surgery may be helpful in determining if multiple neuromas are present as well as determining the exact location and size of existing neuromas.

Our machine offers you the ultimate open MRI experience. You will sit comfortably in a chair completely outside the MRI machine, only the extremity being scanned is placed inside. Depending on your type of exam, you can read, listen to music in a headset or use a handheld game system during the procedure. As long as you sit very still, these activities will not disrupt your MRI.
